JOA funds 2.4 million medical treatments in five years

26 September 2024
In 2024 we celebrated five years of partnering with International Health Partners (IHP), a partnership that has seen JOA funding provide more 2.4million medical treatments to almost 700,000 vulnerable individuals in the aftermath of armed conflicts and natural disasters.

IHP is one of Europe’s leading organisations that sources donated medicines for humanitarian response, supporting people in disaster-hit and vulnerable communities to get vital medicines. Since 2019, JOA has partnered with IHP delivering lifesaving and life-changing medicines and medical supplies to millions across the Middle East, Horn of Africa, Central Africa region, and Haiti.

This partnership demonstrates JOA’s ability as a donor to force multiply the impact of our funding ensuring best value for money for the Jersey taxpayer and high-quality, needs-led humanitarian relief. For example, in the Horn of Africa, IHP procured long-dated medicine and medical supplies that were worth 5x the value of JOA’s grant reaching almost one million patients over 24 months.

How does IHP operate?

IHP’s NGO partners work closely with communities affected by natural disasters or armed conflict to identify health needs and priorities. The organisation then utilises its network of healthcare and logistics providers and pharmaceutical companies to meet those needs. Pharmaceutical companies donate long-dated, high-quality products while the specialist logistics companies that IHP has connections with, generously donate pro-bono or discounted warehousing space, packing and transport services, facilitating the delivery of the donated items, often in challenging contexts.

When transporting medicines and medical supplies, extra consideration must be given to securing relevant import permits and ensuring medicines do not perish in transit (e.g., due to temperature fluctuations). Often, IHP must negotiate challenging security contexts, diverting shipments via alternative routes to ensure their safe passage.

About JOA’s humanitarian response

JOA’s humanitarian response is guided by the internationally recognised humanitarian principles: humanity, neutrality, impartiality and independence. We allocate humanitarian relief to countries eligible for Overseas Development Aid (ODA) as defined by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development’s “Development Assistance Committee” (OECD-DAC) criteria. Our humanitarian portfolio accounts for roughly 25 percent of our annual budget. We work through a closed list of partners which includes UN agencies, multilateral organisations and specialist NGOs – all of whom undergo robust due diligence and comply with JOA’s Anti-Money Laundering, and Terrorist Finance policies.
