It was an absolute joy and privilege to be part of the volunteer team working in St Paul Muko school in Bugarama in August. As a teacher adviser for many years, I have more contact with adults than children these days so was excited to have the opportunity to work with my own (rather large) class of learners. These children, despite being disadvantaged in so many ways, were enthusiastic, joyful, hugely supportive of each other and so eager to learn! In other words, an absolute delight to teach.
Developing spoken English and reading fluency were priorities and areas that I felt comfortable with, but Maths and Art lessons were well outside my usual comfort zone and the expertise of group members was invaluable. On a daily basis after the school day, the group would gather (occasionally with a well-earned drink) to share ideas and work together to adapt the teaching as needed for the following day. This was not formalised or expected but grew out of a desire for everyone to support each other and do the very best for their learners. The team were simply amazing.
The relationships that were forged with the learners, the Rwandan partner teachers, the volunteer group and the Hands Around the World Jersey group will hopefully continue to flourish. My heart is still in Rwanda, but my head is busy working with the team to consider the next steps in working together with JOA, HATWJ and the incredible community of Bugarama.
Thank you JOA for supporting us all in this life-changing journey.
